Postmortem Report: KineticERP Certificate Renewal

Date of Maintenance: April 21, 2025
System Affected: Epicor ERP Server (KineticERP)

Summary

On April 21, 2025, proactive maintenance was performed on the KineticERP server to reissue and install a new SSL/TLS certificate. This was necessary to prevent Epicor total service disruption, as the existing certificate was set to expire at 11:59 PM on April 22, 2025.

Epicor requires a valid and trusted certificate to operate securely, particularly for encrypted communication between clients and the server. Renewal was completed successfully, and Epicor services were only down for about 45 minutes while reissuing and testing was completed.

What is a Certificate?

An SSL/TLS certificate is a digital credential that authenticates a server’s identity and enables encrypted connections over a network (typically HTTPS). In the case of Epicor, the certificate ensures that client applications securely connect to the server and that the server can be trusted.

When a certificate expires, applications may refuse to connect, or users may receive trust warnings—leading to service disruption. Keeping it current is critical for secure, reliable operation.

Actions Taken

  1. Checked expiration date of existing certificate (due to expire 4/22/2025 at 11:59 PM).
  2. Generated/reissued a new certificate through the certificate authority.
  3. Installed the new certificate on the KineticERP server.
  4. Restarted necessary services to apply changes.
  5. Verified successful binding and Epicor connectivity post-installation.

Outcome

  • New certificate is valid and trusted by all clients.
  • Minimal service disruption, but everyone was warned ahead of time, and notified once Epicor came back online.
  • All Epicor functionality tested and confirmed operational.

Scheduled

The support vendor and IT will be generating and installing a new server certificate. This will affect all access to Epicor and should not take more than a half hour to generate and test.

While this is being done, nobody will be able to access or use Epicor. We have chosen to do this at 6PM Central Time tonight to limit the downtime.

Please see Ted if you have any questions.
